- Sun Drying: Ripe coconuts were cracked open, and the inner meat (copra) was scooped out and left to dry under the sun for days to evaporate all moisture.
- Animal-Driven Kohlu: The dried copra was then loaded into a massive wooden or stone mortar (ghani or kohlu) where a heavy pestle, rotated continuously by oxen, crushed the pieces to release the oil.
- Natural Settling: The extracted oil was collected from a bottom outlet and left undisturbed in large vessels for a few days, allowing any leftover residue to settle naturally before the crystal-clear oil was skimmed off.
